How Often Do You Wash Your Sheets?

by Lifeboat Admin ,

Between dust mites, dead skin cells, and bodily fluids, bed sheets take a lot of wear and tear. The only way to keep them clean is by washing them on a regular basis. Yet in a recent UK survey by YouGov, only 35 percent of 2,000 Brits admitted to changing their linen once a fortnight. For the record, experts actually recommend washing your sheets once a week, or at minimum once every other week.

When you purchase high quality sheets, you can rest assured that they will last longer. For example, Classico Commercial-quality sheets are 50 percent cotton and 50 percent polyester. The flat sheets are made to handle the demands of continuous laundry processing. They come in single, queen and king sizes, to ensure you get the right fit.

Here are the steps involved with washing your own sheets properly:

Step 1: Preparation

Wash your sheets separately, without any other dirty laundry. The reason? If you include clothing in the load, it can damage the sheets and cause pilling. Before laundering sheets, pre-treat stains.

Never overload the machine, even if the tub looks big enough to hold a huge load. An overloaded washing machine traps dirt and the detergent can’t get to it. In addition, when sheets don’t have room to move, they can end up wrinkled. It is also important to distribute sheets evenly so that the washer does not stop mid-cycle because of an obstructed centre agitator. An overloaded machine can make a terrible noise, and it often takes a lot of finagling to get it to work again.

Step 2: Settings

Fill the washer with water before adding detergent, and allow it to dissolve completely. Modern washing machines do not require the same amount of laundry detergent as older machines do. Newer detergents are also more concentrated. If you add too much detergent, it can wear out the fabric. Your sheets can then tear or rip easily. Therefore, it is best to use ½ the detergent that you usually use.

Take note, if you have a top-loading or front-loading washer that requires high efficiency detergent, expect there to be fewer bubbles. For white sheets, add ¼ to ½ cup of lemon juice to the washer.

Step 3: Drying

Remove wet sheets from washing machine right away. If you leave them in the washer too long, they can attract mold and mildew which is difficult to remove. Put wet sheets in the dryer on a low or medium setting, as a high setting can weaken fibres and lead to tearing. Do not remove the sheets from the dryer until they are completely dry. Then fold them immediately to prevent wrinkles.

Tip: Washers get dirty from repeated cycles. Detergents and grime can build up easily. To keep your washer clean, run a cycle of water and 1 cup of vinegar once a month. After the cycle, wipe down the washer and open the door so it can dry naturally.
