4 Tips to Make Your Beach Towels Last Longer

If you would like to keep your beach towels fresh and bright throughout the entire season, consider these five tips for making them last longer.
1. Wash brand new beach towels properly.
Before heading out to the water, wash your brand new beach towels to remove any dyes and residues left behind from the manufacturing process. Washing them in hot water with ½ detergent and ½ cup of vinegar will help remove chemicals that may reduce absorbency and set colours at the same time. If your washer does not have a liquid fabric softener dispenser, dilute the vinegar in water before pouring it into the washer. Always move them to the dryer promptly before mildew can set in.
2. Keep towels separate from other clothing.
For the next several washings, continue to use the detergent/vinegar combination and the colours will remain vibrant. When you mix a load of towels with clothing, colours can run, so always wash bright colors separately, preferably with gentle-care detergent. Skip fabric softener and dryer sheets which coat the towel and reduce absorbency. Don’t use bleach, as it breaks down cotton fibers producing lint.
3. Don’t overload your washer and dryer.
Washing too many towels at the same time can result in a mess. Towels do not rinse completely and can become smelly quickly. It is better to wash just a few at a time with a high level of water to ensure they clean thoroughly. Shake sand from towels before washing so they do not become rough and abrasive. Shake towels out when removing them from the dryer to fluff up the fibers.
4. Maintain your beach towels.
Maintain your beach towels between washings. Keep an eye out for loose threads. Snip them with a pair of manicuring scissors before they can unravel. Empty the lint trap after every drying cycle so towels will dry well. Dry on low heat to prevent fading and keep beach towels from shrinking.
