Towel Forts- Not Just For Kids

What better place to start than with the protocol for a successful towel fort experience? Beyond the giggles and an awesome place to hang out in, you may just find that building a towel fort is a valuable bonding and learning experience.

Step one- Let’s pick out your towels. No small feat given the extensive variety available to you. Now that you have your materials, so to speak, it’s time to start the construction process. If you have young ones around the house, let them help design what the fort will look like. It’s best to rig your fort around existing furniture so that you minimize the mess and the eventual re-design of the room when your fort is retired.

First spread a layer of towels on the floor. These can help with cushioning during the day and can double as comfy blankets at night. Next you’ll want to rig the ceiling of your fort, probably utilizing couches or chairs. Make sure that they’re rigged nice and tight by winding them around any wooden bars of the furniture, or tucking the towel ends behind couch/chair cushions. You want your towel to be taut so that you have as much room as possible within your fort.

Now it’s time to decorate! The sky is the limit, this is your space to be creative and enjoy each other’s company. Fairy lights are cheap and easy to set-up so that you have light for evening activities. Pillows are a must for relaxing and lounging. Try to use minimal furniture, use your imagination.

Once you’re happy with the aesthetics of your fort, it’s time to actually experience all that it has to offer. Grab some board games or supplies for arts and crafts. Sit in a circle and tell scary stories. Remember that the most important piece of the experience of a towel fort is the company of those around you.
